Our Curriculum
Since 2000, we have been providing a Catholic education to children with special learning needs, including: Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger Syndrome, and many others. Our students learn in classes of 13 students or fewer and are taught by our Florida-certified teachers. Many students receive on-site occupational and speech therapies, which are included in the cost of tuition. We accept the Florida Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities, Step Up For Students (Income based) and provide financial aid to qualifying families.
Bishop Nevins Academy is shared by both Saint Mary and Saint Martha. The Academy sits atop 17-acres of land, two miles west of I-75 near downtown Sarasota, Florida. Our campus offers students the exclusive opportunity to receive specially designed instruction to meet their unique learning needs in a traditional school environment. We utilize modern technology throughout our curriculum, from interactive whiteboards in every classroom to 1:1 Chromebooks for all of our students. Our campus also has a large fenced playground, acres of play fields, basketball courts, and a school cafeteria serving a variety of hot lunches. Beginning Fall 2016, the newly constructed Zazarino Center for Arts and Athletics offers an indoor gymnasium, stage and music classrooms to fully round out our campus.
Our Curriculum is multidisciplinary and includes only research based materials implemented through diversified instruction by state certified teachers. Students are able to participate in instruction at their level of need. Specialized Instruction is provided by trained teachers in programs such as Orton - Gillingham and Lindamood - Bell. Our curriculum aligns with the Diocese of Venice Curriculum Standards as well as the Florida State Standards and includes: religion, reading, mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, physical education, art, music and Spanish. Our students are taught and receive therapies based on their individual education plan (IEP) in order to achieve their personal academic goals. Students participate in recess twice daily, as well as physical education twice a week. St. Mary Academy is fully accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference and the National Council for Private School Accreditation. We are also a member of the National Catholic Education Association.
